Abstract
This study was aimed to investigate the general opinions and affecting factors toward end-of-life care, life prolongation, and medical decision making in middle and older age groups.
110 subjects were chosen conveniently in Taegu and Seoul from Sep 7 to Oct 11,2001.
The data were collected using questionnaire containing 40 items including the general characteristics, the general concerns toward death, the views on prolonging life, and the attitude about own dying.
The data were analyzed by percentage, mean, SD, and x2-test using SPSS.
The results of this study were summerized as follows:
1. Most subjects were not reluctant to talk about the prospecs of their own death. The larger number of subjects agreed with persistent medical care and felt that the family knew their medical wishes.
2. The factors affecting medical decision-makings were financial concerns, level of quality of life, and burdens to family. The major roles for these factors were the burden to family financially, physically, and emotionally.
3. Most subjects were against prolonging life. Age was not a matter in making medical decisions for life prolongation because the current health status is the mast important. More subject discussed their feeling about life prolonging care with family for appropriate resolution.
4. most subjects have experienced the scene of death. Majority preferred home at the last moment and wanted to be with families. Also major subjects wanted a special activities such as religious support and preferred to be cremated.
5. According to general characteristics there was a significant difference in sujects with experience of hospitalization. They were the least hesitant in talking of their own death.
From the findings of the study, by developing programs such ac Advanced Directives, systemic improvement is required in practicing of qualitative end-of-life care following terminal clients¡¯ needs.
